An Endless Cycle of “Too Little, Too Late”

The anxiety that many CISOs feel is natural—and justified. It is corroborated by the Fortinet Threat Landscape Index, developed just over a year ago. The index, which attempts to provide a picture of the scale and scope of the threat landscape, has so far shown two consistent characteristics: high volatility and an upward trend in overall threats.

Steady increases in the volume, velocity, and sophistication of attacks require a new approach to cybersecurity—one that involves extensive automation across the entire threat life cycle, from a cyber criminal’s initial reconnaissance through his or her action on objectives. Even tasks that require decisions to be made or analysis to be done can no longer be exempted from automation. Manual security approaches simply cannot keep pace with today’s threat landscape, and need to be complemented with alternative models.
