When evaluating architectures for an enterprise
big data platform and data analytics, Hadoop often
makes the shortlist. Hadoop burst onto the data
processing and analytics scene a decade ago with great
fanfare. The promise of this open source, Java-based
programming framework was threefold:

• Rewrite the economics of data analytics by
supporting storage and processing of extremely
large data sets on commodity hardware nodes.
• Help decision-makers conquer exploding volumes of
big data.
• Deliver new business insights unattainable
with traditional data warehousing and
analytics solutions.
